MIX IT UP LUNCH in 4th, 5th grade and middle school.
On Tuesday, November 10th, about 3000 students across the United States participated in Mix It Up Lunch. www.mixitup.org. The concept is simple: Eat lunch with kids you normally don’t sit with and make a friend. Making friends outside your comfort zone is a natural way to break down barriers and have everyone feel included.
On November 17th and 18th respectively, middle schoolers, and 4th and 5th graders mixed it up at lunch too! Each student received a quote about friendship, leadership, or life written by same age peers from across the country. Attached to the quote was a lollipop of a certain color which corresponded to a table color. Each student sat at their respective ‘color’, lunched with a new friend, and together discussed their thoughts and feelings about their quotes and on friendship in general. To close the activity, each student wrote down their own quotes about friendship or leadership.
The students feelings about ‘mixing it up’ during lunch ranged from discomfort to excitement. Most importantly, the activity was a great way for all of us to think about peers who get left out, as well as efforts we can all make in the future to include others at lunch and recess.
