TEMPLE BETH AM member honored for her mitzvah project

The Los Angeles Business Journal held its 19th annual Women Making a Difference Awards Luncheon on May 25, 2010. The celebration honors Los Angeles based women who lead by example, successfully blending effective business vision with a passionate commitment to positively making a difference in both the world of business and in the communities they serve. These women have truly blazed a path of leadership and inspiration for all Angelenos. Over 250 prestigious nominees were considered by the judges.

Longtime Temple Beth Am member, Janet Halbert, was selected as Volunteer of the Year, her exceptional work on behalf of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. Janet founded Hurdle Jumpers, a public 501-c-3 charity, that provides cancer comfort kits to newly diagnosed cancer patients about to start treatment. Since its inception in 2006, Hurdle Jumpers has provided over 3,100 kits which contain a variety of donated sample products from nationally recognized consumer health companies, along with a humor book, Janet’s personal survival tips, educational materials, a relaxation CD and other practical items known to help manage the side effects of cancer treatment.

“Los Angeles is a better place because of the inspiring women in this room” said Janet Halbert, Founder of Hurdle Jumpers, as she accepted the award. "Everyone has been touched by cancer through a family member, co-worker or your child’s friend. I founded Hurdle Jumpers out of my frustration as a cancer patient. I vowed to help others when I recovered from the day-to-day ordeal, which included dry eyes, dry skin, dry mouth along with gastrointestinal distress. I’m so very honored to receive this important recognition from the Los Angeles Business Journal,” continued Halbert, “Hurdle Jumpers blends my business skills and my passion for volunteerism, which I learned from my parents. I share the award with all the volunteers, donors, foundations and corporate sponsors who make it possible for Hurdle Jumpers to help others soar over the obstacles of cancer treatment.”

Scores of Beth Am members have volunteered for the organization including Kathe Pilch, a founding board member. For more info go to www.hurdlejumpers.org. Yasher Koach, Janet, for making a difference in a cancer patient's day!
